Of the 131 Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps in North Carolina during the 1930s, 14 were designated as "colored" camps. One of those, Camp Nathaniel Greene, later redesignated Camp Buck Creek, was located off US 64 at the base of the Riley Cove area of Chunky Gal Mtn. The camp was relatively short-lived, existing only from 1933-1935. Its primary duties were road construction & maintenance, and timber stand improvement. Unfortunately, re-routing of US Highway 64 in the 1950s and 1970s destroyed most of the remaining evidence of the camp, and the rest of the flat camp area was used as a staging area for that road construction.

The only evidence / remains of the camp that I have found are this concrete foundation slab, and the swimming pond & dam. The re-routing of US 64 50+ years ago pretty much wiped it from existence.

Silted up camp pond, with breached dam on the right. Water for the pond was diverted via a channel from the creek that runs down Riley Cove. This pic is from a few years ago; with the current drought, the pond is only damp, with no standing water, as seen in the next several photos.
