1 - Early June, 2025

This location has been due for a prescribed burn the past two years, but it hasn't happened.   I think the growth since the last burn has affected the numbers of some of the uncommon/rarer species here.   I timed my visit to catch the Small Spreading Pogonias in flower, but they were a little late blooming here this year.

Asarum
Mottled Wild Ginger   (Asarum shuttleworthii)
These are one of my favorite Asarums, with larger flowers
than many of the other "little brown jugs" species.

Cleistesiopsis
Small Spreading Pogonia   (Cleistesiopsis bifaria)
I first discovered this population several years ago.   As mentioned, the area is
due for a prescribed burn, and I didn't see that many flower stalks this year.
This species responds well to fire.

Cleistesiopsis_buds
Of the flowering stalks that I did see, most were still in bud.

Chamaelirium
Fairy Wand   (Chamaelirium luteum)
The species is dioecious, and this plant is a male.

Chamaelirium
Female Fairy Wand (Chamaelirium luteum)
Growing against a boulder, this provided one of the rare
opportunities for an uncluttered image of the species.

Silene
Fire Pink   (Silene virginica)
The plants here were pretty much bloomed out, and these
two flowers were the only ones worth photographing.

Early Meadow Rue (Thalictrum dioicum)
I had been seeing a lot of this recently.
