For the purpose of these pages, "Rock Pile Complexes" include stone piles & mounds, terraces and walls.
The issue of historic versus prehistoric origin of piled rock features in the southeast USA remains clouded
despite ongoing research. Prehistoric origins include various Native American uses, while historic origins
include such mundane activities as clearing of fields by early settlers. To confuse things further, some sites
may contain rock features dating to more than one cultural period, and which relate to multiple functions.
