This mine was extensively worked immediately after the Civil War, and consisted of numerous tunnels,
shafts and cross cuts.   It had already been long abandoned by 1896, when a report stated that "all the
excavations had fallen in, so any veins were hidden from view."   Shortly after the turn of the century,
an attempt was made to clean out several of the old shafts, but the effort didn't amount to much.

We had permission to explore the area, which is on private property.   Photo conditions were horrible
in the sun, so I only took a few pics.   I need to return on an overcast day, and get some better photos.

Collapsed_Shaft
Sheldon in one of the collapsed shafts.
From what we saw, this was probably the main shaft at the mine.

Collapsed_Shaft
Although caved in, there was a small hole that continued downward.

Deep_cut
One of the many old cuts at the mine.

Tunnel_1
We found two old tunnels, both with slumped / collapsed entrances.
We couldn't tell how far back they went, but the first had a hole just big
enough for me to wiggle down and stretch my arms out with the camera
to take a few photos.   Sheldon had to pull me back out by my legs!

Tunnel_1
It looks to me like the tunnel goes back a ways.
I'm going to have to check it out when we visit again.

Tunnel_2_mouth
Entrance to the second slumped tunnel.
With the horrible lighting, I didn't photograph the mouth of the
first one, although it wasn't much better here.   This one only
had a small hole, but a strong current of air was coming out.
