| CCC Camp Gaften (also spelled Gafton) was one of four Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camps in Rabun County. The Camp history is a little confusing. It seems to have been originally organized as Camp Moccasin Creek (Camp F-5, Co. 458/342), which soon moved to Camp Tree (Camp F-5, Co. 3427) on the upper Tallulah River. The original Camp site, situated across the road from present day Moccasin Creek State Park, became Camp Gaften (Camp F-10, Co. 1443). The Camp was primaily engaged in forestry conservation (reforestation), road building, and fire prevention, including stringing of 40 miles of telephone line to area fire towers. |
